In the media and common dialogue, people often talk about risk factors casually, based on beliefs and anecdotal information. In the field of public health, however, peer-reviewed research continues to identify known risk and protective factors and best practices for talking about safety in violence prevention. Sometimes this research confirms common beliefs; other times it discredits them, or tells a more complex story.
